In a nutshell
Among the oldest re-enactments in Italy, it originates from an episode involving Opizzo Fieschi. According to legend, after emerging victorious from the conflict between Siena and Florence, he married Bianca dei Bianchi in great pomp, offering the population a large wedding cake.
The event lasts four days including exhibitions, musical performances and palii. On the first day, the city dresses in its medieval garb and the fire shows, flag-wavers and jugglers begin. On the penultimate day, the Addio do Fantin, Count Opizzo's bachelor party, is celebrated. And finally, it ends with the proclamation of the wedding, the sumptuous wedding procession and the cutting of the cake. Countess Bianca cuts a cake of no less than thirteen quintals, prepared by the master pastry chefs of Lavagna and whose recipe is jealously guarded.
