In a nutshell
Every year, on Assumption Day, Garda holds the Palio delle Contrade, one of the most eagerly awaited festivals by locals and among the most cherished for the town's fishing community.
The event was first celebrated in September 1952 by Garda's "Corporazione degli Antichi Originari" on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of its founding.
The current features date back to 1998, when the types of boats to be used in the exciting race were decided.
The challenge is held at night in the stretch of water between the harbor and the town hall - using four flat gondolas. The nine contrade compete along a stretch of about 400 meters that is covered three times. Each crew is made up of four rowers who row standing rowing alternately, according to Venetian rowing (the traditional style of local fishermen).
The regatta is preceded by a parade, along the streets of the town, of rowers carrying long oars on their shoulders, which are then used during the race. The winning contrada is rewarded by receiving a wooden statue of the Assumption, and the day ends with a fireworks display on the water.
