In a nutshell
It is among the oldest folkloric events in Italy. The festival originated as an act of devotion to Bishop Ubaldo Baldassini, from May 1160, the year of his death.
Since then, every May 15, the day of the eve of mourning, the devotional offering to the patron saint became a regular event with a procession followed by a large "Luminaria" of wax candles, traveling through the streets of the city to Mount Ingino (where St. Ubaldo's body has rested in the Basilica of the same name since September 11, 1194).
