What it is and where it is Pennabilli

Pennabilli is a village housed on the rolling hillsides of Romagna, along the Marecchia Valley. It is particularly found enclosed between the remains of two castles that tell a bit about its origin: the fortress of Penna and the fort ress of Billi (the Malatestiana fortress), two heights, two fortresses, on which the people of the Marecchia River found refuge during the barbarian invasions and which later merged into a single town. Today, the village is harmonious, with beautiful narrow streets paved in smooth stone, houses built with local materials, with sober and elegant lines, and squares and plazas where you can meet the people of Pennabilli and enjoy its lively soul.

Why is Pennabilli famous?

Pennabilli is well known for being chosen as the home of poet Tonino Guerra, who spent the last years of his life here and left an important legacy. In addition to his poems, which still adorn some of the streets in the historic center, Tonino Guerra left Pennabilli a beautiful diffuse museum that recounts the past of rural life with the poet's delicacy.

Not to be missed: the museum of mathematics

Going through villages one often finds oneself visiting fortresses and castles, churches and art museums, but here in Pennabilli there is something out of the ordinary: a museum of calculus. It is called Mateureka and tells the story of calculus and mathematics through ancient texts, archaeological finds and calculating instruments that over the centuries have contributed to the advancement of science. There are also interactive labs, because while history is always important, so is the joy of discovery and the curiosity that will lead to learning more about a topic.Especially if you think math is not for you, this is really a place not to be missed.

Fun fact: Pennabilli, Tibet and the Dalai Lama.

In the 18th century missionary Father Orazio Olivieri left Pennabilli to found a mission in Lhasa, Tibet. Here he got to know the local culture; he even went so far as to write the first Italian-Tibetan dictionary. His activities here left a very positive memory, so much so that in 1994 and then again in 2005, the Dalai Lama visited Pennabilli itself. On the occasion of the second trip, a metal structure with three Tibetan prayer scrolls and a bell, which according to tradition are fundamental elements for raising one's prayer to heaven, was installed on the hill of Penna.
