The Subappennina project: Santarcangelo - Urbino - Fabriano

Work began on the Subappennina Italica (or Subappenninica, as many say) project in the late 19th century. There was already a coastal railway line connecting central Italy to the Po Valley, but in wartime a new railway, built inland and protected by the Apennines, would have been safer, less exposed to enemy attacks from the sea.

A bit of history: a strategic railway line

The Subappennina Italica was thus supposed to connect Santarcangelo di Romagna to Urbino and then to Fabriano: an ambitious and strategic project. Then, however, things took a different turn. The project and work progressed in hiccups, amid bureaucratic obstacles, variants, rivalries between municipalities and a few landslides. On the Santarcangelo-San Leo section, construction work began in 1909 and continued even during the Great War. By 1918 there was San Leo with railroad track, tollbooths and stations done and finished.

On the Urbino side, meanwhile, work had already been done as far as Auditore-Casinina. But the intermediate section-that is, between San Leo and Auditore-Casinina-was never built. Once the war was over, the project ran aground and was finally abandoned in the 1930s. Never did any train leave Santarcangelo on the Subappennina...
