Palio della Marciliana, when Chioggia returns to the Middle Ages
Crossbowmen, craftsmen, drummers, street performers, nobles and ladies: for one weekend in June, Chioggia is medieval!
On the third weekend of June each year, Chioggia takes a step back in time, and from being a village of fishermen and lovers of strolls in the piazza, it becomes a lively medieval town.
Throughout the weekend, Corso del Popolo is filled with artisan banquets, figurants, stilt walkers, street performers, crossbowmen, nobles and figurants, historical processions... on some occasions even the Doge arrives!
Day and night, there is always something good happening in town, but the real highlight of the festival is on the last day, when the crossbowmen's palio, one of the oldest in Italy, takes place. An event truly not to be missed!
Insider tip: don't limit yourself to an hour or two. Look for lodging in the center and enjoy the days punctuated by the rounds of the drummers and the hubbub of the merchants. Some experiences should be lived to the fullest!
