In a nutshell
The village of Cavriana in July dresses up to celebrate - within the walls of the Gonzaga Castle - the Palio della Capra d'Oro (Golden Goat Palio).
For the occasion, the village streets are populated with more than 400 figures in Renaissance costumes, flag-wavers and musicians. During the first evening of the festival-usually the first Friday of the month-a propitiatory dinner is held where the contrade will announce their representatives to the race that takes place on Saturday.
The following day, in fact, after the historical processions is held the "Race of the Goats," in which seven kids-one for each contrada-accompanied by their "cavrer," will compete in an obstacle course.
The festival refers to the legendary finding of the "Golden Goat," an artifact that was designed by Isabella d'Este for the people of the ancient city of Cavriana.
In addition, as per tradition, typical delicacies are also served at various food stands, and shows and entertainment of all kinds also take place. The last day of the festival is dedicated to an exciting singing competition that again sees the contrade compete for a prize.
