The Velvet Palio of Leonessa
Renaissance historical re-enactment featuring the six contrade of Leonessa
In a nutshell
The town opens its doors to the "Palio del Velluto," a tradition that has its roots back in 1464 and that for 115 years stimulated so much antagonism among the locals that Margarita of Austria-the daughter of Charles V-was forced to suspend it. It will be enlivened by the heated rivalry between the Sesti, the six contrade that make up Leonessa, who will compete in the characteristic games of the "palla grossa," the "bread race," and the "giostra del veluto" for the conquest of the ancient banner that will be displayed by the winning contrada for a whole year. Surrounding these fun and spectacular contests will come to life the Historical Reenactment, fire shows, musicians, jesters and Renaissance recipes to be enjoyed in the characteristic taverns
