The Days of Azzolino

Grottazzolina immerses itself in medieval atmospheres during the first week of August, when the historical reenactment "I Giorni di Azzolino" is held to celebrate the figure of Azzo VII (Azzolino), marquis of Este and Lord of Ferrara. The streets of the village are invaded by splendid historical processions in strictly thirteenth-century clothing, characterized by the typical "quartata" surcoat with ochre and amaranth colors. Re-enactments of ancient crafts workshops, historical arch tournaments, shows and grand medieval dinners are held during the event. In addition, the "Joust of the Monk," an equestrian joust in which the mace is used, takes place on the last day. The Joust closes with the proclamation of the "Estense Paladin."
