The Good Friday Baptists of San Lorenzo Maggiore
A centuries-long history of faith and tradition
In a nutshell
The penitential rites of Good Friday in San Lorenzo Maggiore, represent the great moment of the community expressing its gratitude to Christ and the Virgin of Sorrows.
It is certainly a singular tradition that is lost in the mists of time and that calls for the participation of all Laurentini near and far as well as tourists, faithful and the curious. The earliest records regarding the procession date back to the 1700s, when the ancient church of San Rocco, in the town's historic center, was equipped with a valuable statue of Our Lady of Sorrows, the same statue that is still carried in the procession and in whose honor it is held today.
