What it is and where it is
Between the blue of the small lake of Monate, the cleanest in Italy, and the green of an evocative forest, the two small villages of Travedona and Monate, once independent, now form a single municipality of a few thousand inhabitants, surrounded by beauty and peace.
Why it is special
In Travedona Monate, lake and mountains meet to create a splendid panorama that, especially in the summertime, attracts many tourists who can stop to visit the town and bathe in Lake Monate, the cleanest in Italy, as well as set off on foot or by bicycle to explore the surrounding area. But perhaps the most satisfying way to unite the souls of this area is to get lost in the colors of Lake Monate while being lulled by the flavor of the local peaches, "Perzic de Munà ," which can be enjoyed even out of season in characteristic tin cans.
Don't miss
Both historic towns envelop visitors with their own special character. Indeed, both Travedona and Monate are marked by characteristic rural houses built of pebbles and ancient wash houses. And the contact with local traditions becomes even stronger during the Monate Festival held on the first weekend of August: on Sunday there is a "cuccagna on the lake" while on Monday there is a splendid fireworks display by the lake.
A bit of history
Excavations have been conducted in the lands near the lake that have unearthed bronze, shards and flints from the Neolithic age. In the lake, on the other hand, the remains of two pile-dwelling settlements have been traced, and a dugout dug out of a tree trunk has also been found and is now preserved at the Como Archaeological Museum. Some Roman-era gravestones and a lime kiln possibly belonging to the same period were also recovered.
Trivia
The birth of Lake Monate is shrouded in a legend unknown to most. It tells of a beautiful maiden named Bianca who, in love with a soldier who was at the front, rejected any other proposal, even that of a young feudal lord, who in revenge forbade the villagers to provide water for Bianca and her mother. One day the mother fell ill, and Bianca had to beg the feudal lord to give her water, but he remained impassive. So the girl put a curse on him, and the castle well began to regurgitate water, flooding the place: thus was born the pond of Monate.
