The Marecchia Valley is a place that inspires peace: it leads the way from the heart of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines to the Adriatic Sea following the tranquil course of the Marecchia River. All around, the hills of Romagna glow with their lush nature and the many villages they host. And, in keeping with tradition, many of these villages have sprung up around or at the foot of fortified towers and walls.
These structures are often counted among the number of castles and fortresses in Emilia Romagna, but in reality they are elements a mighty defensive system spread between Montefeltro and Valmarecchia. In fact, this very area was the scene of clashes between two very powerful families: the Malatesta and the Montefeltro, both determined to extend their dominions and protect their territories thanks to strategic structures. So let's set off on a journey that will take us to admire the fortifications of Rimini, Santarcangelo di Romagna, Verucchio, Poggio Torriana and San Leo.
