What it is and where it is
Our gaze rests on the beautiful and immense Villa Correr-Pisani. Its classical lines and understated elegance give us a foretaste of the richness of its frescoes. But it is not only Wonder that is found inside. Between the rooms is an interactive digital tour that strikes us powerfully. This memorial museum tells the story of the Great War and the story of all those who could not live in times of peace. The installations are designed to be immersive they evoke such vivid emotions that we feel alongside those who suffered the violence of ignorance.
Why it is special
Venetian villas were born as places of pleasure and rest, and this one is no different. The serenity of the putti and allegories in the frescoes seems to clash with the rawness and pain of war. The effect is that of a kick to the pit of the stomach: your breath catches, your muscles contract. Perhaps, too, this contrast is part of the memorial, perhaps it is a warning. Do not forget, even if everything looks good, even if the sky is clear. Do not forget, because it happened and it can still happen.
Don't miss
The installations featured allow the war events to be placed in context and describe them in the round: the premises, the propaganda, the inventions, and the social changes they brought. The perspective, however, is not only to the past. We never miss the opportunity to contextualize the events of the Great War in the places in the Veneto that we can visit today. It will be a very strong emotion to walk the paths of the Plateau, for example, after seeing them through the eyes of the soldiers. Only then can you finally hear the memories whispered by the stones and trees.
Trivia
To tell this story of divided, struggling peoples, we have chosen to stretch our gaze beyond the borders, reaching as far as France, to Caen. We are close to where the Normandy landings took place. It is precisely the Memorial that this city wished to dedicate to the War but, above all, to Peace, that inspires the MeVe installation.
