What it is and where it is
MAcA, Museum A for Environment, is a museum that has made environmental awareness and protection its mission. Interaction, experience and fun are the means to which it entrusts its message. The result is a state-of-the-art museum hub where topics range from nature to human activities through their interaction. Installations explain in a simple way to children and adults the theme from time to time declined, while workshops and games stimulate active learning and memory.
Why it is special
Environmental protection is a theme as dear as ever in our time, yet MAcA is not its child. It is a forerunner. This museum that takes us to think about energy, waste, water, food, knowledge transmission, transportation, and much more was born in 2004, rightfully earning the title of the first museum in Europe entirely dedicated to environmental issues.
Don't miss
Experiments are a key part of the exhibition; not doing them would be like entering the Vatican museums blindfolded. Shyness and uncertainty have no place here, not even for the less science-minded, who will enjoy the help of knowledgeable guides. Not to mention that there is always some event and temporary exhibition that can enrich the experience at MAcA even more.
A bit of history
The MAcA's main building is a rationalist-style building that began as a new access to Michelin 's industrial spaces and gradually changed its use, eventually becoming the headquarters of the company's fire-fighting team. After years of neglect, the building was renovated by architect Agostino Magnaghi to house the museum starting in 2004.
Trivia
The creation of the MAcA wanted to send a very strong message: taking space away from industry and converting it to green space and environmental sustainability is possible and a winning choice. In fact, the site on which it was built was the steel mill district of Fiat and Michelin. The French company itself had chosen this place to build its first foreign detachment.
