The basilica and the families of Canzo

The Basilica of Canzo is dedicated to Saint Stephen, but its facade tells something more about its history. Characterized by a beautiful portal with stone decorations, it features two niches, halfway up, containing statues of Saints Stephen and Miro, who are particularly venerated in Canzo. The artistic refinement of the exterior as well as the interior is the result of the involvement of Canzo's most important families who financed the construction of the Basilica both directly and by promoting fundraisers throughout the area. This connection is also reinforced by St. Miro himself: the Paredi family, in fact, considers him as a relative, since in life he was known as Miro Paredi, born at Secondo Alpe.

The pocket and its history: between plague, fire and rediscovery

But in the heart of Canzo Parish, there is another element of very strong devotion: a "pocket" steeped in history, a precious casket linked to the great St. Charles Borromeo, bishop of Milan. This treasure was unearthed a decade ago by a young priest from Milan, Fr. Cristian Pina, whose efforts also involved the restoration of the urn of St. Miro.

The protagonist of this story is Monsignor Camillo Fino, a name that still resonates today as the most illustrious provost Canzo has ever had. Arriving in 1946, he bequeathed the provostship an extraordinary collection of relics. But the fate of this treasure was sealed by the fire of 1970, and many relics were lost or forgotten.

Enter Don Cristian Pina, a priest determined to redeem the story. Thanks to his meticulous work, the relics of St. Charles Borromeo have returned to light, linking Canzo to one of the greatest bishops in Church history. Four precious relics, including a cilice, a shirt worn by the bishop and the mysterious "pocket" containing a parchment from the 1600s.

A faithful companion of St. Charles Borromeo during the plague epidemic of 1576, the pocket is a symbol of the deep love and spirit of sacrifice that animated the saint in his life and works. A testimony that moves those who stand in its presence.
