From the Ionian to the Serre, a village carved in stone

A municipality on the Ionian side of the Serre, located on the northeastern slopes of Mount Trematerra (m 1228) between the two streams Ancinalesco and Melis. The territory stretches from the Ionian coast, where the seaside hamlet Marina di Dàvoli is, almost to the Serre watershed. The main town is set halfway up the hillside at 401 meters above sea level: grown up around the stone houses of the old core and along the road that reaches it, it is a lively center of more than five thousand inhabitants.

A history rooted in myth

Historians believe the Magna-Greek foundation, 7th century B.C., by settlers from Daulia, a city in Phocis, a historic region of Central Greece. Recent studies advance the further hypothesis that this territory is identified with the kingdom of the Phaeacians, the people who welcomed Odysseus after he was shipwrecked. Well documented, however, is the medieval phase, first as a site of Basilian monastic settlements and then as a hamlet dependent on Satriano. Definitively attested in a hilly position, the village will experience its golden moment in the 16th century to which date the beautiful religious and civic architecture that distinguishes it.

Churches and palaces, ornament of an industrious village

Dàvoli's fortunes in past centuries were derived from the generous flow of its waterways, a source of hydraulic power capable of moving seven mills, nine mills and five forges. These, the foundations of an economy that encompassed forestry activities, including charcoal production, and everything derived from a generous agriculture, from oil to wine, from dairy to hides, with an organic outline of handicrafts, with a point of pride for silk weaving. Widespread prosperity enabled Dàvoli to distinguish itself by the quality of its built environment and by that vitality that still distinguishes it today.

In the labyrinth of alleys leading up to the Matrice

The parish church of Santa Barbara, built at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, stands on the knoll that marks the center of the town, at the apex of a network of picturesque alleys. The building has three naves and a façade divided by Corinthian pilasters, a large Baroque cornice surrounding the median portal. Inside, as many as ten altars: the gaze first converges on the statue of the titular (and co-patron saint), honored in early December with the kissing of the relic, then shifts to that of the patron saint St. Victor, in the guise of a Roman soldier with the palm of martyrdom, the protagonist of the great feast scheduled for July 20 and 21.

The chestnut, from the forest to the streets of the village

Dàvoli is one of the Serre municipalities most committed to the revival of the cultivation of the fruiting chestnut tree. Among the various initiatives, with a moment of great collective participation, is the Chestnut Festival, held in Davoli Borgo in early November. The invitation that goes by word of mouth is "jamu a castagne!" in the prospect of gathering in the village to enjoy them as roasted chestnuts (pastidi) as well as boiled (vugghiute), except also giving in to the temptation of jams and sweets.
