Camini, the village of Jungi Mundu

The small town of Camini seemed like one of many inland Calabrian villages destined to empty out. It was not worth the beautiful hillside location, nor the view of the Ionian Sea, nor the proximity to the stretch of sea that only a few decades earlier had returned the two glorious Riace Bronzes.

Why it's special: welcome and regeneration

An international project, a social cooperative established in 2011 to welcome refugees and displaced persons to Camini... And here the empty streets come alive again: children running around, scents of exotic foods, voices and songs that have come from afar...

"Jungi Mundu" means "unite the world."

For Camini, hospitality has become an opportunity for rebirth and redemption. Today the Cooperative employs some 30 people: there are clay and carpentry workshops, a bread oven, textile and tailoring workshops, a school, and a Casa delle Conserve scented with capers, licorice, sun-dried tomatoes, basil... Fallow land has become social gardens, and houses abandoned by Camino emigrants have been renovated and opened to these new families and visitors.

A multi-ethnic village

In a feast of languages and knowledge, traditions are handed down, crafts are taught, and recipes are exchanged that from both sides of the Mediterranean tell stories of peasant wisdom, community and sharing. And to the communal table arrive together "incugnettate" eggplant and falafel the Syrian way.

Welcoming village, happy tourist

One thing leads to another. Those who arrive as tourists in Camini feel that they are doing something good not only for themselves but for the whole community: they find a widespread hotel, a world in color, a chance to learn arts, and they trigger a flywheel of exchange and sustainability.

Fun fact: eggplant "incugnettu"

"U cugnettu" is the traditional earthenware container that was (and still is) used to store vegetables, olives, anchovies, etc. The lid is a wooden disk ("u timpagnu") on which a large weight is placed, to crush the contents well and store them best.
