Why it's special
Abandoned huts have a special silence, made of the smell of hay and earth... Farm tools are waiting for the work that was their rhythm, lulled by the distant dirge of cowbells, perhaps imagined. From the unhinged doorway of a barn, a roe deer escapes almost resentfully, while the clear sky vibrates with the calls of buzzards, high and motionless.
Not to be missed
To know a place, one must absorb it, savor it, gluttonously devour the experience that becomes food, the food that becomes experience. Right on the Hill, one should not miss lunches and dinners with strong flavors, where meat, farmhouse eggs and local cheeses engage with the aromas of wild herbs and full-bodied wines. And then the mountain huts transformed into refuges welcome the body and soul, repurposing the ancient ways to get deeply in tune with the woods and the starry sky.
A bit of history
The Pilone dell'Olocco is actually a chapel, built in the 19th century thanks to the communities of Chiusa and Lurisia, who united strength and energy in the construction of this sacred building on the site of the ancient Pilone. At one time, the religious celebration, around mid-August, drew the inhabitants of the nearby hamlets to attend Mass and have a picnic lunch on the surrounding meadows. The name refers to the tawny owl, a nocturnal bird of prey once common in these woods, and whose calls can still be heard in the silence of the night.
Trivia
The Colle del Mortè owes its eerie name to the bloody battles between the local people and the Saracen Moors who had their outposts in Provence. The Monregal valleys (those around Mondovì) are characterized by an Occitan dialect different from that of the other valleys, the Kyè language. The somatic features of their inhabitants also show more Mediterranean characteristics, with olive skin and brown eyes and hair.
