September in Riace: the feast of Saints Cosmas and Damian
Three days of celebration for the Holy Physicians, with processions and dances of the Rom and Sinti community
Since 1734, Cosmas and Damian, physicians and healers, have been the beloved patron saints of the town of Riace. Their statues are carried in procession, side by side, twice every year.
The main celebration takes place from 25 to 27 September and is a vibrant expression of local culture and folklore. The statues are carried through the streets of the village by numerous bearers, from the Mother Church to the Sanctuary dedicated to them.
The joyful procession, accompanied by the town band, becomes a true human river: the entire community takes part, along with many devotees who walk from nearby villages or Riace natives who return from abroad especially for this great communal celebration.
Above all, this festival is a major gathering of the Rom and Sinti, who share a deep bond with these saints. Their devotion is expressed through music and dance that continue throughout the night: tambourines and accordions set the rhythm for a distinctive tarantella that symbolically reenacts a knife duel between two men.
The celebrations for Saints Cosmas and Damian are a wonderful opportunity to experience Riace together with its community.
