San Calogero Bread Puppet Festival

Religious festivals in Sicily always have a deep value, rooted in the community and the territory. Linked to the veneration of St. Calogero in Campofranco is the famous Sagra dei Pupi di pane: this celebration originated as a form of thanksgiving to the saint for a good harvest. During the feast many loaves of bread, many of them with legs, arms and heads, are distributed to form "pupi." According to tradition these shapes were also made for intercession, for grace received or to protect children during pregnancies. Today this festival, which is deeply felt by locals and followed by enthusiasts and tourists, has become a landmark in the province and region.
