Marostica: the Living Chess Match
Every two years, Marostica returns to the Middle Ages for an unforgettable spectacle in Piazza degli Scacchi
One of the most original events in Italy. For over a hundred years, every September, the beautiful town of Marostica has stepped back into the Middle Ages, bringing to life an episode – more legendary than historical – said to have taken place in the mid-15th century: a chess match to win the hand of a young woman. But only in even-numbered years.
The chessboard is the square itself: the pieces, played by performers in sumptuous medieval costumes, move across the squares, recreating famous chess matches. The journey back to the Middle Ages is completed by performances featuring flag-throwers, processions, knights, jugglers... And, of course, the unmissable fireworks.
You can attend the event by booking a seat in the stands arranged all around the square, with a total of 3,600 numbered seats. But it is well worth arriving early to soak up the festive atmosphere and excitement that fill the whole town.
