Madame Freya: discovering an exceptional woman
Animated tours at the Civic Museum of Asolo
The hundred lives of Dame Freya, traveller and writer.
Animated tour® in the Freya Stark room of the Civic Museum of Asolo with Alessandra Brocadello and Carlo Bertinelli.
The animated tour® recounts the key moments in the life of Freya Stark, the great English traveller, writer and photographer who lived in Italy for many years, highlighting the existential value that travel had for her and her familiarity with the town of Asolo, which can rightly claim the title of her “hospitable home”.
During the tour, in addition to Freya herself, we meet landscape architect and photographer Herbert Young, who left her his villa in Asolo, Professor William Paton Ker, who encouraged her to study Arabic, and Azis, her guide on her journey to Alamut, the fortress of the Old Man of the Mountain, whom she nicknamed “the Philosopher” in her book “The Valleys of the Assassins”.
The itinerary proposed in the room dedicated to her in the Asolo museum is structured around the circular desk, representing the world and at the same time a “fixed point” where Freya collected her memories and translated them into words; the trunk and suitcases containing the essentials for travelling and recounting her journeys from 1927 onwards to Lebanon, Syria, Iran, Yemen, Turkey and Afghanistan; and the three-door wardrobe, which expresses the profound meanings of travelling as an existential experience that is transformed and transforms the traveller.
