The Palio of the Crossbow of San Sepolcro
Since 1594, the historic palio celebrating the ancient tradition of Arezzo's crossbowmen
Much more than a historical reenactment, the Palio della Balestra is an ancient challenge that has been renewed for centuries in Sansepolcro, in honor of St. Egidio. In the picturesque setting of Torre di Berta Square, crossbowmen compete just as they did in the Renaissance period. The winner of the competition is the one who manages to hit the target with an arrow shot from the "balestrone" at a distance of 36 meters.
In addition to the highlight of the event there are numerous cultural, tourist and gastronomic activities to appreciate the beauty of the village of Sansepolcro and get to know its community up close. The event echoes the spring edition of the palio held instead in the Umbrian village of Gubbio.
