Feast of St. Peter in Chains and Hoop Parade
The third Sunday in August in Frasso Sabino celebrates the patron saint St. Peter in Chains. The basket parade is one of the most important moments of this day rich in tradition and history
In a nutshell
The young frassarole awakened at sunrise by the dark gunshots in the sky and the sound of the band, put on their typical Sabinese clothes and prepare to carry the festive "Canestro" around the small town
The clothes worn are handed down from grandmother, to daughter, to granddaughter. A long skirt, cinched at the waist by an embroidered bust; over the skirt an apron; over the shoulders a shawl and, on the head, a handkerchief held with a pearl pin. All embellished, when possible, with antique jewelry.
After the religious service, which opens the day, the young Sabinese, together with the entire population, begin the procession to follow the "Macchina di San Pietro" to the church of San Pietro In Vincoli, near the cemetery of Frasso. A long walk where young boys, dressed according to tradition, with a white apron cinched at the waist and a red cloak, carry the Saint on their shoulders to the Church.
When the procession is over, the young women harness the "Tortaro," a large doughnut prepared with eggs, flour, salt, sourdough and an addition of wine, and take the Basket, kicking off the Parade.
