Kite Festival
Rediscover imagination and creativity through the poetry of Kites!
In a nutshell
Established in 1955 in Urbino, the Kite Festival is a competition that combines imagination, creativity, art and culture. Each first weekend in September, the program includes: on Saturday, the parade and presentation of the participating city districts; on Sunday, in the afternoon, the traditional contest of aesthetics and technique.
The initiative sees the ten Contrade of Urbino compete (Duomo, Hong Kong, Piansevero, Piantata, Mazzaferro, Lavagine, San Bernardino, San Polo, Monte and Valbona), which represent specific areas of the city. The undisputed star of the event, common to all the contrade, is the Kite! The latter depicts traditional craftsmanship and creativity, passed down from generation to generation by the passion of the participants.
The event recalls Giovanni Pascoli's famous poem L'Aquilone: "[...] Now we are still; we have in our faces Urbino windy: each one sends from a crag a comet for the turquoise sky. [...]". The Contrade in fact on the crags of the Cesane Mountains fly their Comets for the turquoise sky, creating an atmosphere of joyful freedom, winking at that very famous Urbino ventoso.
