What it is and where it is
The Tappeiner is one of Merano's iconic promenades. A rammed-earth path winds its way along the Merano basin, elegantly bordered by a light railing that encloses the space but at the same time allows it to dialogue with the surrounding landscape. No detail has been left to chance: the fine gravel that covers the path, the flower beds that line it alternating with the bare rock, or the varied vegetation, and then benches, lookouts, and even a few small cafes. It can be accessed from different points in the center of Merano to continue and admire the beauty of the city from above. even from the center of Tirolo.
Why it is special
It seems strange to say about a promenade, but the Tappeiner leads just about everywhere and, at the same time, nowhere. Its gentle slope, few steps, and many conveniences make it resemble an elegant city street for the stroll of polite society. And in keeping with tradition, this kind of walk is an end in itself: you get a mild workout, enjoy the elegance of the setting, socialize, and turn back. But here we are in the mountains. So here several paths intersect the walk, opening up adventurous possibilities: Lagundo, Velloi, St. Peter's Church or Castle Tyrol.
Not to be missed
Along with the various routes that can be taken, along the path one can admire wide views of the city, the valley and the surrounding mountains.One would almost say a collection of wonderful postcards depicting different points of interest, all framed by enchanting flowers, trees, bushes, vineyards and apple orchards. And those who are lucky will find themselves accompanied by birds and squirrels that make the scenery even more beautiful. The absolute most beautiful thing? It doesn't matter how old you are, or how accustomed you are to walking. The walk is for everyone, young and old!
A bit of history
The promenade is named after the physician, botanist and anthropologist Franz Tappeiner, who in 1892 donated 22,000 florins to the city of Merano to build a scenic route intended primarily for nursing guests. And in 1896 he again donated another 5,000 florins on the condition that they be used to complete the promenade that is now a feather in the cap for the city of Merano.
